Employees go on mass leave for Indo-Pak clash

Pak federal interior secretary Chaudhry Qamar Zaman had made a recommendation to the Establishment Division a few days ago that Wednesday be declared a public holiday. In India, around one lakh Facebook users agree to this, and more than 36,000 have decided to skip work and college as India and Pakistan meet in a World Cup semifinal at Mohali today.

According to a recent survey conducted by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM), an average corporate office has received casual leave applications from around 60% of their employees for today.

In the survey conducted across Delhi, Chandigarh, Mumbai, Pune and Bangalore, around 50 top officials and 500 employees of various corporate offices were interviewed by ASSOCHAM representatives to unearth the impact of the Indo-Pak clash on the corporate world. "Indo-Pak matches are more than just cricket," says ASSOCHAM National secretary general, DS Rawat, "And considering the hysteria of the semifinals, it is a matter of interest to everyone. India Inc. is also viewing it as an opportunity to strike a bond of amiability with their staff, and is thus granting leaves to their employees to help cheer our Men in Blue emerge victorious against their arch rivals."

For HR professional Tarishi Kwatra, today is a half day. "We're supposed to work 12-8.30pm otherwise, but today, we're working till 5:30pm. We've even sent this as a mail to our clients, so that they know we're lightly staffed," she laughs, saying that her husband is in the US and has bought an online high definition link to watch the match. Samir Chawla, IT professional, applied for leave days ago, so that he doesn't need to face any last minute cancellations. "And I gave my boss an honest explanation. Why hide your national pride?"

Employees in Mumbai are the most enthusiastic as corporate offices in the city have received the maximum number of casual leave applications (35%), closely followed by Delhi (30%), Chandigarh (25%), Bangalore (15%) and Pune (10%).

In Madhya Pradesh, the post-lunch session of the assembly has been cancelled and a special screening of the highly-anticipated match has been arranged for the legislators.

Who says bosses are mean?
Out of all the 50 top officials of various corporate offices, it emerged that:

- 15% declared a full day leave as employees are busy applying for casual leave on one pretext or the other.

- 10% granted work from home facility.

- 45% declared a half-day/short leave for employees.

- 30% have various arrangements for screening the match to let employees enjoy the match while working simultaneously.
